This is a CR edit. Whether we TL or not each week will most likely depend how much CR gets delayed. What do you guys think about CR versus an original TL?

  1. Beckett says:

Obviously it will depend on the individual show, but in general I find most of CR’s translations to be subpar at best. They clearly have an “A” team that gets put on their biggest shows and they do an okay job, not great usually but acceptable. But any other shows usually range from “meh” to “holy shit this was translated by a room full of monkeys with typewriters”.

  2. Auro says:

As far as the poll goes, I don’t care that much who translates my anime as long as its a good translation. Sometimes CR is really on the ball and does a good job translating anime. Sometimes subbers get translators/editors who do a bad job of a show for one reason or another. If CR is doing a bad job, subbers should step in. If CR is doing a good job, I don’t care if you’re just editing their subs and putting them up. In the end, as long as I can enjoy anime, I don’t really care about the source of the magical floating letters that tell me what’s going on.

  3. limabean says:

    Thanks guys.

I voted for “I don’t care”, but I do typically prefer fan translations because they tend to care for and know more about the material than official subs. Official subs are usually decent these days though, and hopefully a fan edit would catch some of the mistakes they made, especially in regard to the source material. So basically I’m fine with both (and do care), but there wasn’t an option for that…

  4. Gnomejon says:

Truthfully, it depends on the sub group and the show. For big shows, like Fairy Tail or Toriko, I’ll go with a CR rip because I know they’ll do a good job, but with pretty much anything else (most of the 12-24 episode shows) I generally prefer an original sub, even if it takes a few days longer. Especially when it comes to great sub groups, like you guys, I would greatly prefer an original sub.

  5. mass says:

Edit is fine enough for Sword Art Online. If people want it fast, they can get CR subs. If they want good subs, they can wait for you. If they want super quality subs, there’s always one or two groups out there (and maybe even yourselves) who would wait for the BD releases anyway, especially for “hot” titles like SAO. Furthermore, who knows they might change spellings or have different context for translation depending on the later episodes.

  6. Asdfjuma says:

Well if this ep was a CR edit. I have no problem with it.

Some people are just to proud doing their own translations when they could just be editing. If your editor knows Japanese as well that’s a bonus as they should be able to easily pick up on any major problems and change things to how they would of translated it.

  7. required says:

CR can do decent sub’s as most of the Fansub groups out there too. Both sides have done good and bad subs. So it depends on the single show.

  8. Anifan says:

Very tough question, sometimes their translations can actually be quite good depending on the show/who translates it for them, can’t expect consistency across the boar…
If it’s good enough that an edit is possible then by all means edit it, if it’s has been derpped badly (depending on a persons tolerance – I’m tolerant about some mistakes in timing/slight spelling mistakes because it’s all about the experience) haden for example is derp

  9. pepperoni says:

I don’t care except when fansubbers translate what’s being said in English by the seiyuu as something else I’m fine with it that’s annoying and unnecessary. Oh wait you guys already do that… whether CR or Fansubs.. what’s with that???

  10. anon says:

Can’t say I care too much for minor differences.
Nuance is often better with fansubs thought. Also they tend to put a lot of effort into karaoke and signs, which is much appreciated.

Basically those are done well enough with a CR edit.
So why do all that work to translate something from scratch when there is a decent script available?

  11. Aventor says:

It is OK but, I followed your guide how to playback your encodes but I have troubles with subtitles in openings/endings of Sword Art Online from your releases: They are blinking/disappearing/uncomplete.
I’ve tried to use VSFilter, but improvement was minimal.
I’m using MPC-HC with LAV Video, LAV Audio, madVR (installed properly, 32bit versions)

    1. Aventor says:

Ok, I managed my playback to work properly, just new VSFilter is needed:
      https://code.google.com/p/xy-vsfilter/downloads/detail?name=xy-VSFilter_3.0.0.63_Installer.exe

    2. cock-chan says:

      >LAV Video, LAV Audio, madVR
Why do you need all this? MPC-HC can play hi10p by itself.

      1. pepperoni says:

True that. I find LAV video is faster in decoding the video, I do suggest that even for low end PC’s like mine. Not sure on LAV audio doesn’t seem to work or I’m not noticing any differences. madVR for those high end PC’s (doesn’t work on my PC) probably for those who plant their face on the screen to look for minute details to cry about like they do on BakaBT.

      2. killazys says:

Latest MPC-HC vanilla build from SVN’s internal ffmpeg based H264/AVC decoder dithers down to 8 bit. Latest LAV decoders/ffdshow-tryouts will not dither down to 8bit, which allows you to retain the benefits of higher bit-depth accuracy. (Well, ffdshow won’t do it as long as you don’t enable any of the cute filters it offers.)

  12. sangofe says:

It’s a waste of time to make someone translate something that is reasonably well translated by CR… Honestly, what were you even thinking?

    1. sapphire says:

IMO CR translations (for SAO at least) are bland and lifeless, and no fun to edit. The pre-edited CR script is far worse than one from our TL, Koku. He’s got style and overall better word choice that conveys characters and the unique world setting well. It’s like the difference between trying to make a gourmet meal working with a prime cut of meat, or working with a can of Spam. There’s only so much you can do to a heartless translation to make it enjoyable to watch. You know?

The question is: whether or not the general populous notices the difference, and what their opinions are on the matter.

PS—”What were you even thinking” — you sound super entitled here. Fansubbers hate that.

      1. kokujin-kun says:

It’s okay, he wants me all to himself :3

      2. Xythar says:

Eh, I had fun making Ozma more interesting: http://notesmash.org/xytharimg/ozma.png

It just took ages. That being said, having a good translator is even better because they often come up with good lines you didn’t think of and vice versa, so I guess in the end it’s really just up to what you feel like doing.

        1. sapphire says:

          I like your editing.

          1. Xythar says:

            Thanks!

            1. sapphire says:

No, thank you for giving me enjoyable Binbougami edits. \o/

      3. sangofe says:

I’m a fansubber myself, bro. Actually I wanted to write “what the bloody hell were you thinking, stop wasting valuable spare time of one of my friends.” Voilà.

  13. man00ver says:

I’d be comfortable leaving it up to you and your judgment.

That said, I discovered this group while comparing translations of Nazo no Kanojo X. For this English-speaker, yours were the best. I don’t know how much extra effort would be needed to put a little Woot-treaking into a CR script, but if that could be done quickly, it might be the “best of both worlds.”

  14. Fireboy says:

Depends on the show, but for SAO I’d rather have an original translation rather than CR edit

  15. Fireboy says:

Also forgot to ask this, but will there be any changes in SAO’s scheduled airing time due to the Olympics?

    1. sapphire says:

      We haven’t heard of any.

  16. Dj_dzusik says:

Prefer fansubs even if only, because i cant get anything from CR in my region besides NS few others.

  17. Vance says:

    CR sucks. FanTL ftw/

  18. sleepy920 says:

I like kokujin-kun’s translation for this than CR. Is he going to continue translating it?

  19. HanoFist says:

I’m not a good judge of the translation quality: The only Japanese I actually know is what I’ve picked up through anime osmosis. That being said, I still prefer fansubbed translations of shows important to me (with the watch-and-delete or low-priority shows CR is fine). On the occasions where I’ve run the same episode simultaneously between CR and a fansub, you guys make it more interesting.

  20. dudestar says:

where the F!!!! is H dekinai!???? don’t tell me its hiryuu’s fault, they’ve been really slow lately

  21. DmonHiro says:

How exactly are people voting if they have no idea what was actually being said?

    1. sleepy920 says:

I think based on style (at least for me) of which they prefer. I don’t doubt Raze’s ability to check the translation, but when comparing CR to Kokujin’s script, Kokujin has more flavor to it as CR feels bland.

  22. Piano says:

Which icecream do you want ?

    1) Vanilla ! -> 30%
    2) I love chocolate ! -> 12%
    3) Chocolate is better than everything -> 16%
    4) Gosh i really wish it was chocolate ->21
    5) Chocolate is the way to go! ->21%

    —-

And vanilla wins with a whopping 30% !

    1. sapphire says:

Is this a roundabout way of saying you think 2 options are the same?

      1. Bidum says:

It’s illustrating that , when there’s 2 possible outcomes , there should be 2 crystal clear choices. Anything else is just BS.

        1. sapphire says:

That makes sense. However, this poll is only asking for general opinion, and will not necessarily have any affect on what we do, because other factors have more sway in that.

Making an opinion poll only have 2 choices like that obfuscates how people really feel, and wouldn’t be useful information for me.

    2. Anifan says:

I vote for Raspberry Ripple… i want icecream now :(

  23. berkzer says:

you should put up a comparison between two script so that we know the style of the two subs.

    1. sapphire says:

See if you can find out yourself, from watching. :3

      1. Hollow says:

But I can’t. I’m too stupid to figure it out unless I have comparisons.

Quick question, has Koku TL’d any episodes of this series yet (I need something to compare it to), or are you guys comparing to his in house translations?

        1. janice says:

          He TLd ep 3

          1. Hollow says:

Ah. I thought that one was better. Or at least, had more heart to it.

So, now I am a believer that CR is crap when it comes to smaller series like these.

            Thanks janice :D !
